Gerrit van Wijk Ariesz: 1 farmer (1765) 2 of De Vondeling, geleegen agter de Piquetberg over de Oliphants Rivier 3 born 1714, Cape of Good Hope 4 baptized 30 September 1714, Stellenbosch 5 died circa 1787 6 will dated 11 April 1775 and filed 21 November 1776 Notes: Their first child was baptised and they were married during the same church service. Although not specifically mentioned in the church register, this custom, intended to ensure that the child was legiitmate, is recorded several times in the Drakenstein Church registers (see, for instance, Gerrit's uncle, Willem van Wijk). Their children are given as listed in the Estate Inventory drawn up after the death of Gerrit van Wijck, dated 29th May 1787. When he and his wife made their joint will in 1765 he stated that he had no parents then living. He signed with a cross mark. Their main loan farm, De Vondeling, which they had no doubt bought from the estate of his brother Willem van Wijk in 1774, they left to their eldest son, Arij Willems van Wijk, but they also had two other farms; Matges Fonteijn in the same area as De Vondeling, and Klip Fonteijn, lying beyond the Doorn Rivier on the Roggeveld Mountains. These two farms were left to their second son, Gerrit Matthijs van Wijk. (for the parents of Gerrit van Wijk, see my note).
