Christoffel Snijman 1 farmer 2 died circa 1706, (a date in Henning Viljon's Inventory) 3 Notes: Mansell Upham has presented a well argued case for Christoffel Snijman being the son of Catharina van Paliacatte, a bandit banished to the Cape by the Batavian administration, most probably fathered by a VOC employee, Hans Scheider, whose presence at the Cape and association with Catharina, he documents. In Capensis 3/97 and 4/97 ] Although, due to the nature of the documents and the participants, certainty is not likely to be established, Chrisitoffel Snijman certainly inherited, as sole heir, the estate of Anthonij Janse van Bengale, the husband of Catharina van Paliacatte. His schoolmaster, up to the death of his stepfather, is documented as Jan Smit, krank- besoeker of the church at that time. From the evidence of Christoffel's signature in 1690, he must have been a good schoolmaster with a good pupil. [ source: Cape Archives MOOC 14/212 ]
