Cornelis Koopman 1
born 1691, at the Cape 2
baptized 24 October 1691, Cape Town 3
died circa 1771 4
 | Notes: | He lived presumably somewhere in the area between the Piekenierskloof and the modern Porterville and Clanwilliam, since from 1737 to around 1770 he was part of the team designated to maintain the roads and drifts from the Piekenierskloof to Hannes Pijl's farm to het Cruijs.
he appears in the muster rolls of 1711 and 1712, 1718, 1719, 1721, 1722, 1725 and 1733, living in the district of Drakenstein.
In the paden en wagen book (Cape Archives: 1 STB 19/133) he appears under the district of Drakenstein, in 1711 and 1712 in the team responsible for 'from the top of the Klapmuts berg to the Paarl', and from 1733 (the next date extant) in the team known as 'Piekenierskloof', their duty to repair and maintain the roads and drifts of that area. Also in the latter team are Frans and Alewijn Smit, Jochem Koekemoer, Arnoldus Johannes Basson, Lodewijk Putter, Jan Olivier Cornelisz, Theunis van Aard and Hendrik Ras. Cornelis is listed in all extant lists from 1711 through to the list drawn up around 1769. The next complete listting starts around 1780.
His sons first appear in the list started 1769, in the team responsible for 'Over de Olifants Rivier van de plaats van Jacob Mouton de oude tot Barend Lubbe de jonge'. The dates against this list are 1770 to 1773, and among the names on this team are Pieter Gouche, Willem Koopman, Hendrik Coopman, Nicolaas Vlok, Johannes Matthys Straus, Bartholomeus Coopman, Michiel Coopman, Hendrik Lubbe Hendrikz:, David Klijn, Jacob Sas, Johs. Lodewijk Spangenberg, Gerrit Coopman, Jan Coopman, Cornelis Kouter and Hend: Muller . |
