Hilletje Smit 1
born 1691 2
baptized 1 April 1691, Cape Town 3
died 16 December 1760, Waveren 4
 | Notes: | Although she later appears in the records as Hilletje, she was baptised Hulsie according to the Cape Town registers - perhaps this was the way the dominee heard her parents say her name? Throughout the baptisms of her own children her name is spelled in various ways, generally suggesling the pronunciation 'Heiljtje'.
Around March 1705, aged fourteen, on her way home to her step- father's house in Jonkershoek, Stellenbosch, with a jug of beer that she had been sent out to fetch, she was waylaid by a slave, Jacob van de Cust Coromandel, who asked her to sleep with him.
On being repulsed he told her he would force her. When she started to scream for help, he threatened to cut her throat, but she was rescued by the Freedman, Casper Vigier.
On the 10th June 1705 Jacob was hanged and his body left hanging to rot as a mirror and deterrent for others.
(From the account given in the records of the Council of Justice, Cape of Good Hope, CJ 782, 4).
I have assumed that she is the same Hilletje Smit, wife of Matthias de Beer, whose Estate Accounts were drawn up in 1763, although only one of her children would be named for her side of the family. |
