Maria Olliver
John Gillam 1
canteen keeper 2
born circa 1811, Deal, Kent 3
baptized 29 November 1811, St. Leonard's, Deal
died 6 November 1875, Alexandra Road, King Williams Town 4
Notes:
His obituary in the Kaffrarian Watchman of 8th November 1875
says that he and his brother, unnamed, came to the Cape in 1843
in the same regiment, and Raymond Evison, in 'The South Africa
1853 Medal' lists Troop Sergeant George Gillam and Sergeant
John Gillam with the 7th Regiment of Dragoon Guards which
arrived at the Cape in 1843. The newspaper article states that
John Gillam took his discharge in 1848 and settled in King Williams
Town, whereas his brother remained with his regiment and
returned to Europe.

A note from 'Dr.A.W.Burton's Manuscript: Vol.4, p.132 (supplied
by William Jervois) states that John Gillam was the owner of two
hotels in King Williams Town, first 'The Fountain' and later the
'Royal Oak' on the corner of D'Urban Street and Alexandra Road,
opposite Holy Trinity Church.

In the Old King Williams Town cemetery is a gravestone recording
the death 15th November 1860, aged 21 years and [4] months,
George Edward Gillam, born Newcastle, England, 15th July 18[..]
