Hendrik Meintjes van Den Berg died 17 October 1762, at the Cape 1 Notes: The contemporary records (church registers) name him variously as Hendrik, Jan Hendrik or Hendrik Janse, and the variations on his surname are legion. Although they do also appear with just the name Van den Berg, his children and grandchildren generally seem to have used Meintjes van den Berg as their surname. I have, therefore, used this name for the family. In 1719 he lived by the Salt River, behind the fort, and transported stones. (source: TANAP, C. 51, pp. 53-65. 21 Nov 1719: 'Hendrik Mantje is in wesen, woond aan de Zoute Rivier agter 't fort en rijd klippen'). It seems that the will of his daughter, Anna Elisabeth (CJ 2661, 82, dated 1755) gives her father's name as Heinrich Meintjes van den Berg in Munsterland. In old age he was looked after by carers paid by the Church at Cape Town and in 1753 his son-in-law, Johann Hasse took him into his care.
