Pieter Meerhof circa 1636-1668 Eva of the Goringhaikona circa 1642-1674

Pieternella Meerhof 1 born at the Cape 2 died 1713, most probably, and presumably during the smallpox epidemic 3 Notes: She is certainly the mother of the two children, Johannes and Christiaan, baptised 17 February 1709, and I have assumed that she was the mother of the other children named in the inventory drawn up after Daniel's death. In the resolutions of the Council of Policy at the Cape, for the 14th and 23rd July, 1677, it is noted that Bartholomeus Borns and his wife Theuntje propose to relieve the Deacons and Overseers of the Poor at the Cape, of the two minor orphan children of the late Sr. Pieter Meerhof and his wife Eva, a Hottentot, namely Pieternella and Salamon, whom they propose to take with them at the earliest opportunity, to Mauritius, travellling on on the ship 'De Boode', and promising to care for them in all respects and bring them up to a civlised way of life until they shall have reached the time of their marriage or some other approved state. On 29th November 1718 he applied to the Council of Policy to enter the service of the Dutch East India Company to try his fortune in India, saying that he was at present a ward of the Orphan Chamber and very poor.
