Notes:
Although I have not been able to find any unequivocable proof that Pieter
Gous, the son of Andries Gous, born circa 1719, was the same person as
Pieter Gous, husband of Aletta Vorster, we do know that the former was
still living in 1748, since he is named as one of the heirs of his grandmother,
Johanna de Clercq, and that he was still recorded as such when the estate
accounts were finalised on the 8th August 1757. It seems to me pretty
certain that we are here dealing with the same Pieter. See also my notes
below on other clues, as well as my article in Genesis, February 2007.

# The parents of Pieter Gous

Maria van Staden, in her will dated 177., refers to him as her nephew (neef).
This puzzled me for a long time, but I now think she must have regarde him
thus through her brother-in-law, Alewijn Smit who was married to Hester
Bekker, aunt of this Pieter Gous. Throughout their lives Francois and Alewijn
Smit are recorded in the muster rolls of as farming partners along with their
respective wives, and I believe they always farmed near one another.

Maria van Staden and Francois Smit were witnesses at the baptism of one of
Pieter Gous and Aletta Vorsters' children, and two of the daughters of Alewijn
Smit and Hester Bekker were also witnesses at baptisms of other of their
children.

The naming of their children which, if it followed one of the conventional
patterns of the time, could be a clue to his parentage, seems to be as follows.
The first son named for his maternal grandfather, the first daughter named
for her 'aunt' Maria van Staden and her paternal grandmother Johanna
Contermann, the second daugher after her maternal grandmother, Elisabeth
Lubbe, and the second son after his paternal grandfather, Andries Gous.
