# The parents of Matthys Michiel Basson When he made his joint will with his wife in 1780, he stated that both his parents were already dead. At this period baptismal witnesses were almost always very close relatives of the child, such as grandparents and uncles and aunts. At the baptism of their first child, Mattheijs Michjel, in 1767 the witnesses were Hendrik Feijt en Barbara Krugel, the parents of Maria Feijt. At the baptism of their second child, Barbara, in 1769 the witnesses were Mattheijs Michielse Basson senior and Martha Meijburgh. I have therefore assumed that these were his parents. Their son, Matthijs Michiel, is listed as one of the heirs of his father in 1775. Several other of the baptisms of their children are all consistent with Matthijs being a child of these parents.
