In his petition to the Council of Policy, presented 5th October 1723, he stated that he had arrived as a soldier in 1716, in the 'Bentvliet', that he was able to support himself as a surgeon, and asked for his burgher papers. This he was granted in consideration of his good conduct. (Leibbrandt, H.C.V., Requesten 1715-1806, 1906, page 830b and Resolutions of the Council of Policy of Cape of Good Hope, C. 68, pp. 51-66,)
The VOC ship 'Bentveld' departed Texel 24 Nov 1715, calling at the Cape between 7 March 1716 and 25 March 1716, but I have not found his name on the muster rolls of that year (dated end of June). (De VOCsite Schepenlijst)
In the muster roll of 30 June 1717 he is listed as a solider, Isaac Nieuwhout of Amsterdam, in the company under Gerrit van Baarsenburgh of the Hague, vaandrig. (VC 49, 1717, page 23)
He was a widower at the time of his marriage in February 1724. He and Anna van Wijk first appear in the muster rolls of free persons dated the end of April and beginning of May 1724.
In the records this surname is spelt in various ways, but Isaac him- self signed his name Isaac Nieuwoudt in, for instance, Cape Archives MOOC 8/5, 81 The inventory of their goods drawn up after the death of his wife, Anna van Wijk. |
