Schalk Willemsz Burger 1 farmer 2 of De Halve Dorschvloer, situated on the Oliphants River 3 born 1720, at the Cape 4 baptized 20 October 1720, Drakenstein 5 died June 1782 6 Notes: I have assumed that the child baptised in 1720 and the man married in 1742 were the same person - the names are identical and, so far as I can see, no other child at that time received those names, that is Schalk Willemsz Burger. His first son, Willem, was presumably named for his father, the baptismal witnesses his mother Elsje van der Merwe and his brother Barend Burger. In the opgaaf returns Schalk Willemsz Burger first appears in that of 1741 as a single man with the usual one horse, two guns and a blade.
