After both of them had died, their uncle, David van der Merwe, was appointed guardian on 7 Feb 1742. In her will dated 1747, Elsje expressed her wish that her farm on the Vier en Twintig Rivieren, called 'Houd Constant', should pass after her own death, to her daughter, Maria Magdalena, wife of the farmer, Willem Burger.
