One presumes that he must have died before this without having any living heirs in 1803? There is a marriage record of 'George Thwaites of the Parish of St. Clements in the Town of Hastings, Sussex' to Ann West. The licence was issued on 9th November 1782 and a John Holt of Rye, Sussex stoodbond. The marriage took place at Stone in Oxney church on 10th December 1782 and was witnessed by John Holt and a William Mackloy. Manwaring Baines, published by F.J.Parsons Ltd., Hastings, 1955 page 239 The chamberlains' accounts usually show only one ropemaker per year: John Mann(1692-98), James Wright(1700-01) ... After this date details are scanty, but we know George Tree was working from 1742 to 1765 ... By this date there was a great demand for sails, and there were usually at least two sailmakers at work in the town: Jeremiah Thwaites, possibly an ancestor of the shipwright, (1742-69), John Butler (1753-55), and John Fautley (1764-69). He doesn't actually give a source for the sailmaker information but I presume that it also comes from the chamberlain's accounts which I have not seen.
